So we went searching for answers.
On this month’s Story49, we’re exploring love through the stories of five local couples.
We searched the region to collect some good old Alaskan love stories. A big thanks to all of the couples who opened their hearts to us. You can scroll below to learn a little bit about each couple. The audio for each story will be available online the day it airs on KNOM. We hope you enjoy their stories as much as we did!
PART ONE: Chasing Waterfalls

Kandis and Eddie Tate met ten years ago at Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka. At first, Kandis didn’t like what she knew about Eddie, but a fateful hike they took together alongside Indian River changed everything.
PART TWO: Something About Laughter

“There’s something about laughter and when you let it all loose and laugh and don’t hold anything back, it’s really beautiful. And she did that at the rec center inside the gym… and I whipped around. And I was like, ‘oh my gosh’. I knew it was her.”
Lily Fawn White and Rhonda Sparks crossed paths in Nome, and it was love at first laugh. Even through periods of long distance they stuck together as a team and are stronger for it.

Bob and Vera Metcalf’s love story is not only about the meeting of two people, but the meeting of two cultures. Their love was both challenged and strengthened by Vera’s roots in the traditions and customs of St. Lawrence Island.
