If you’re hoping to buy a piece of city land, bids are due at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon. About two-dozen plots of “surplus property” are up for sale by the City of Nome—otherwise unused, these lots could generate money for the city both in sale and future property taxes.
The city land sale was prompted by one Nome resident who expressed interest in one plot of city-owned land, but the City Council decided to expand the sale, putting a total of over $730,000 in land up for bid.
Some of that land is being leased by the college, and likely will not be sold. But about $295,000 worth is zoned residential, mostly on the east side of town. City Clerk Tom Moran said those lots are going for around $21,000 each—$3 per square foot for property about 7,000 square feet.
However, Moran said he doesn’t expect most of the properties to be sold, since they need fill to come up to grade and most require water and sewer work. If the properties aren’t sold, they’ll revert back to their current status until a potential future sale. The deadline to make a bid is 3 p.m. Thursday.
