Race season is underway! This week it’s Iron Dog: 2,031 miles of high speed snowmachine racing across mountains, (hopefully) frozen rivers, and cold, wind-swept tundra; a grueling speed chase from Anchorage to Nome to Fairbanks.
Tuesday evening, KNOM News met race leaders, Team #10: Nome’s own Mike Morgan and Chris Olds from Eagle River, at East End Park in Nome, the half way point for the race. They were shortly joined by team #41 Davis / Simons, team #16 Minnick / Olstad, and team #17 McKenna / VanMeter, rounding out the top 4.
Wednesday is a day in the garage for “wrenching,” repairing any damage done over the first half of the race. But each minute of repair, beyond an initial 15 minute inspection time, is on the clock, factored into leave time when the race starts again. Already well-worn racers meet at a fantastic banquet Wednesday night in Nome; a time to warm up, rejuvenate, and share stories from the first half of their journey.
Thursday morning the race is on to the finish in Fairbanks!
