More coastal flooding may be coming to Western Alaska later this week. “A series of storms,” the National Weather Service (NWS) reports, “will sweep across Northern Alaska Tuesday night through Thursday.”
After a blustery weekend of strong winds and flooding in some Norton Sound communities, NWS says “another round of stormy weather is likely across much of Western Alaska,” bringing with it “heavy surf and the possibility of coastal flooding Wednesday night and Thursday to the Bering Sea coast, including Norton Sound.”
Per the NWS special weather statement, among those at risk will be “the areas in Norton Sound that experienced coastal flooding on Sunday.”
*Update: as of 12 noon Monday, the National Weather Service has retained a coastal flood warning for the Eastern Norton Sound and Nulato Hills.
NWS has canceled flood warnings for the St. Lawrence Island and Bering Strait Coast, Northern and Interior Seward Peninsula, Chukchi Sea Coast, Yukon Delta, and Southern Seward Peninsula Coast (which includes Nome). Winter storm warnings or watches, however, remain in effect for these regions.
