The temperatures are hovering in the low-50s, and our region’s families are fishing, hunting, and preparing to gather greens and berries. They are also listening to KNOM. The radio is a constant companion for thousands of Alaskans, and if they could, they would thank all who make this radio ministry possible!
Last week, KNOM staff covered a very unusual event: the arrival of a pod of killer whales (orca whales) just off the Nome coast. They were hunting a smaller gray whale who may have been traveling with its mother.
Instinctively, the pair of gray whales moved very close to the shore, confusing the orcas’ sonar attempts to locate the mammal; eventually, the orcas swam off and left the gray whales to continue their trek.
Families are blessed with a sea bounty that benefits the culture and nutrition of the hardy residents spread out across Western Alaska. We thank everyone who contributes to the health and welfare of these good people.
