Thanks to a sponsorship with a regional air carrier, KNOM Radio is frequently the beneficiary of free air travel to many of the communities we serve. We view these “village trips” as essential to our mission; it gives us a vital opportunity to connect with our listeners in person and to do live reporting, on location.
Per usual, this year’s volunteers are on the front lines of these trips. In late May, Eva DeLappe took a fruitful trip to the community of Elim (EE-lim), an Iditarod checkpoint village on the coast of the southern Seward Peninsula, overlooking the Norton Sound.
In Elim, Eva focused on meeting with a few respected elders – Betty Segock (SEE-gock) and Eliza Katongan (kuh-TUN-gkin), pictured – whose life stories are the subjects of current episodes of Elder Voices. These shows are so cherished by the people of our region, and they’re possible thanks to you.
