This Saturday in Nome, a special meeting will take place, bringing together cultural experts from across Western Alaska: knitters, hunters, spinners, carvers, guides, and others. They’ll be coming from Nunivak Island, Wales, Shishmaref, Unalakleet, and elsewhere to talk and share information about all things muskoxen: hunting them, what to do with the meat, the hide, the qiviut(muskoxen wool), and lots more.
The Muskox Cultural Exchange is being organized by Nome’s Northwest Campus, a division of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. In our Profile, Laureli talks with Northwest Campus’ Carol Gales and Claudia Ihl.
