Former Iditarod musher Sebastian Schnuelle isn’t mushing a sled dog team in 2012, but that doesn’t mean he’s staying off the trail.
Following the trailbreakers and the mushers on his snowmachine – and reporting as an “armchair musher” for the Anchorage Daily News – Schnuelle brings a deep insight into the strategies of Iditarod mushers and the rhythms of the trail.
Talking with KNOM’s Laureli Kinneen in the Ruby checkpoint, Schnuelle was full of enthusiasm for one musher in particular – Nome’s Aaron Burmeister – who is running some of Schnuelle’s dogs in his 2012 team. “He (Aaron) has done it obviously right,” Schnuelle said.
The German-born musher also commented on the long runs that seem to be commonplace for the race leaders of the 2012 Iditarod. “These are the runs you train for all season,” he said. “The dogs are conditioned for it.”
