In Takotna: Ruth, from Germany

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race truly is an international event. Mushers have come from Norway, Canada, and, this year, from Jamaica, and in the Takotna checkpoint, one volunteer veterinarian has come all the way from Germany to share her skills.

Her name is Ruth, and she talked with our trail reporter Laureli about her experiences volunteering for the Iditarod; 2010 is her first year working with The Last Great Race. Ruth says that although the work schedule is a challenge, she admires the “culture” and endurance of the mushers. She was also glad to try Alaska Native food – especially Eskimo ice cream:
