After the first day of competition, Team Alaska has captured three medals at the Arctic Winter Games in Nuuk, Greenland. All three awards came in Snow Snake, a Dene Game with Athabascan origins.
Tim James of Nome is one of the medal-winners. He took silver in Junior Men’s Snow Snake — a distance event that has competitors throw spears along an ice track, recreating a traditional hunting technique. Vying against almost 30 opponents, James earned second place by propelling the spear just over 263 feet.
Team Alaska also won gold in the Junior Men’s and Open Men’s Snow Snake events. Drew Dewberry is the Open Men’s champion. Originally from Nome and now living in Eagle River, he won with a distance of more than 337 feet.
In the medal count, Team Alaska is tied for second place with Team Nunavut. They both trail Team Northwest Territories, the frontrunner with five medals.
