Position: News Reporter
Hours: 40 hours weekly
Wage range: $25.50-$29/hr DOE, non-benefitted
Location: Nome based, some remote work may be allowed, village travel expected

Summary:

This Nome-based job is the entry-level core position and includes on-the-air work combined with other news duties. A high degree of job flexibility, respect, and team orientation is required. Work hours vary with staffing and seasonal changes. Reporters are supervised by the News Director or General Manager in the absence of a director. Initially, this position will train to be proficient in both production and news, then specialize in news reporting in accordance with the employee’s professional development plan.

Job Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree/equivalent experience or degree in progress considered
  2. Experience in journalism/media preferred
  3. Affinity for rural Alaska
  4. Ability to learn and operate studio-broadcasting equipment, production andnews software
  5. Excellent written & speaking skills
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and on a small team, andincorporate feedback
  7. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required
  8. Ability to travel on small aircraft, traveling as need for news story coverage
  9. Alignment with KNOM mission and values
  10. Driver’s license

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deejay as scheduled – this includes recording/preparing updated weather and announcements
  2. Maintain, uphold and promote station format and scheduled programming
  3. Travel as needed for news stories or feature programs
  4. Attend and report on city, regional and statewide news events
  5. Pitch/write/produce news content for newscasts that align with FCC guidelines and the KNOM mission and values
  6. Prepare & anchor newscasts, weather recording, cover breaking news events and take assignments
  7. Prepare online content appropriately and in a timely fashion
  8. Work directly with the Program Specialist for help with news coverage
  9. Other duties as assigned
